"NEW SUPERIOR DAY TOUR"
The Original Superior Combination Day Tour which we pioneered
and operated since 1991 up to January 2009 is temporarily and indefinitely not possible due to natural causes that affected the waterfalls route of the Original Superior Day Tour for which we substitute a longer route via a scenic route with an equally spectacular waterfall. But due to ever changing road conditions of the mountain pass leading to the Toro Waterfall a substitute Tour combined with Poas would have to replace this tour if need be.  Other Poas Combination Tours.

A Combination of 5 Tours in ONE DAY!

SCENIC DRIVE TO POAS:  After a 7:30 am pick-up from your hotel we’ll travel 11 miles on the Pan American Highway to the provincial capital of Alajuela to see 2 points of interest your knowledgeable guide will tell you about. From here our scenic drive towards the Poás Volcano Cloud Forest National Park takes us up the slopes of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range through beautiful landscape adorned with coffee, dairy, strawberry, flower and fern farms in addition to quaint typical small towns with well-kept homes.

COFFEE PLANTATION SHOP to sample and purchase if you wish top quality roasted coffee while taking in the beautiful views of the rolling landscape of coffee plantations and of the Central Valley below.

POAS VOLCANO:  At approximately 9:00 a.m. we’ll enter the cloud forest of the Poás Volcano National Park where we'll walk 500 scenic yards on a flat paved pathway to the crater, located at a cool 8,900 ft. above sea level.  Your guide will show you the beautiful giant leaves of the “Poor Man’s Umbrella” plant, epiphytes (air plants) and other plant species unique to the lush tropical cloud forest ecosystem that lines the walk to the crater.  From the crater’s rim you’ll have the unique experience of  looking down 1,000 ft. into an active volcano crater that's nearly 3/4 of a mile (1.2 km) in diameter and constantly emitting sulfur fumes and steam.  The crater's array of colorful rock strata, aqua green colored acid lake surrounded by tropical could forest and barren old lava floe rock formations together with the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, gives your experienced professional guide plenty to tell you about.

VIEW STOPS:  After leaving Poás around 10:30 a.m. we'll make brief stops with a fantastic high view of the central valley below.

Grecia & Sarchi Towns: About an hour or so after leaving Poas we'll stop for lunch in or after the town of Grecia (Greece) with a steel church imported from Belguim in 1894 before continuing on for a quick stop at the town of Sarchi famous for its oxcart factory and souvenir shops.

Grecia's Steel Church             Sarchi's Oxcarts  Zarcero's         Zarcero's Topiary garden

WATERFALL:   Later by way of a scenic mountain road and hidden valley we'll visit the spectacular "Toro" (“Bull") waterfall,. This impressive waterfall cascades some 500 ft down an extinct volcanic crater to continue as a pristine river towards the northern plains.

Toro Waterfall view and Heliconia Flower at Coffee Farm shop.

JUNGLE RIVER WILDLIFE MOTORBOAT CRUISE:  Around 4:30 p.m. we arrive at the river town of Puerto Viejo.  Here we’ll take a covered motorboat cruise for 1 hour down the calm flowing waters of the shaded jungle lined banks of the Sarapiquí River.  This is a pleasant and relaxing way to see MONKEYS, colorful TROPICAL BIRDS, IGUANAS, CROCODILES OR CAIMANS, SLOTHS and other tropical animals that your knowledgeable guide will help find and point out to you in addition to interesting facts about these animals.  You’ll also see what life on a tropical jungle river is like, with children swimming, people fishing in the river, farmland, banana plantations and the occasional home on the banks.  We carry a full compliment of refreshments, from cold beer to sodas & bottled water on our boat trip, as we do in our vehicle, available all day long at no extra cost.  Immediately after the boat trip we’ll drive a couple of short blocks to a souvenir shop to make use of their restrooms where you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase beautiful art, woodcrafts and souvenirs at economical prices.

Returning to San José a different way you’ll enjoy a scenic 1-½ hour drive back with a ½ hr or 20 miles of it being through the impressive Braulio Carrillo Rainforest National Park.  Here with weather conditions and visibility permitting, we’ll take in the views on the way back to your hotel or place of lodging by 5:30 or 6:00 p.m.

Price: From $110/person*.  All inclusive; Coffee Farm shop, Poás Volcano entrance fees, quick visit of Grecia's Steel Church, Sarchi, Waterfall entrance, river motorboat fees, lunch, refreshments all day, hotel pick-up & drop-off all included.
